Un poliziesco vecchio stile che utilizza il romanzo - un po' misogino - di Simenonper raccontare con buon ritmo un'indagine in fondo meno complicata delle apparenze. Come spesso gli succede, Maigret lavora soprattutto sul lato psicologico e Gabin è prefetto nei suoi panni a volte impacciati mentre attorno a lui il cast si rivela azzeccato grazie a una Girardot radiosa e il gruppo di poliziotti ben caratterizzato (Lino Ventura è Torrence). E' anche vero che questo è il 'cinema di papà' aborrito dalla Nouvelle Vague (girato in studio, mdp rigida, chiacchiere tante e azione poca), ma si può rinunciare alla contrapposizione 'ideologiche' per due ore di riuscito intrattenimento.
